Bluebird house being taken over. What should I do?
I have a bluebird house in my back yard that has 6 eggs in it. Just last week I was watching the momma and dad flying in and out of it. On Sunday I noticed other little birds, I think they were finches, flying in and out of it with pine straw. I looked in the house yesterday and noticed the other birds built a nest on top of the blue bird nest with the eggs still in it. I haven’t had time to watch and notice if the parents are still around. What should I do? Move the other nest out into a different house, or do you think it’s too late and the parents have abandoned the eggs?
Lunula gave you great advise, but I caution you from removing eggs. All native wild birds are protected by federal law – except European Starlings and common house sparrows, as they are not native to the US and are considered ferals or pest species. Unless you are absolutely SURE that it’s one of the feral species, you should never touch or clean out boxes during active nesting.
Since the invaders are native birds, they are protected, and you cannot legally tamper with the nest.
Please take Luluna’s advise. Bluebirds do best in open areas (no tree cover) with nest boxes mounted on posts. Providing more nests spaced far apart, gives them a better chance at success, and should bring more nesting pairs to your yard. Just remember to keep the feeders away from the bird houses.

Goldfinches and bluebirds are both wonderful birds. Maybe you can provide bird houses for both?
