Professional Closet Advice

Hiring a professional closet designer is a big step towards improving your closet space.  It can be a good idea to hire a designer or organizer if you don’t have the time to do it yourself.  However, you should keep in mind that your input will still be needed.  The closet designer will need to ask you a lot of questions to determine which closet arrangement will work best for you.   Here are some things to think about before you hire someone or before you attempt to do it yourself.

1)  Take everything out of the closet before your closet professional shows up.  It is very helpful, saves time, and sometimes money, if you create an inventory list of things that you want to keep in your closet.  You will need to thin out your belongings.  Get rid of as much as possible before you begin so that you don’t waste time and space on items that are no longer in style, in good shape, or fit correctly.  Create an inventory list and categorize you clothing by type, length, or color, whichever you prefer.

2)  See how high you can reach in your closet with a hanger.  You or your designer may want to place a hanging bar up high to create room below for drawers or shelves.  Take a measurement of how high you can comfortably reach with the hook of the hanger.  Don’t forget to consider the other people that may share this closet with you.  If you’re taller than them, you may want to take their measurement instead.  You wouldn’t want to find out later that your wife can’t reach the top bar.

3)   Let your closet organizer know if you have any hobbies that require storage of special items.  If you play tennis, you may want a special area of the closet to be designated for your tennis gear, including clothing, socks, sweatbands and bags.  If you are designing a closet that will hold a lot of sports equipment, you may want one side of the closet to be reserved for that purpose.  Special containers can hold balls, while clamps, shelves and specialty hangers can hold bats, hockey sticks, pucks, skates, and cleats.  Remembering what is important to you will help your designer to prioritize the spaces that they create.

4)  Sometimes we want to keep little things in our closet that don’t normally go there.  You may have a computer in your bedroom, and would like to keep printer paper, ink, discs, and other office supplies out of sight in the closet.  Determine how much space you need for this.  Your designer will want to measure how much of each item you wish to keep in the closet so that they can purchase the right size containers, files, etc. for your closet.

5)  If you don’t go through a designer, remember that you can buy many closet accessories wholesale or directly from the manufacturer online.  If a designer buys these items for you, they will most likely charge a service fee and a mark-up.  Ask if it’s okay for you to buy your own <a href=”http://www.everythinghangers.com”title=”Clothes Hangers”>clothes hangers</a>.  You and your designer can decide which types of hangers will work best for your closet, depending on the space and the types of garments that you need to hang.
