Today’s barcode scanners attach to computers via a “Y” cable and act as alternate keyboard input. Therefore, whether you scan a barcode or use the keyboard is virtually undetectable from a program. Your method of loooking at the length is valid, presuming the check digit is not included in the text below the barcode.
A method I have had luck with in the past is to measure ticks between keystrokes and find a value that would work most of the time. 50 ms is a good place to start. The only failure in this method is if the user selects a key and holds it down the input will be treated as a barcode when in fact it it is keyed.
The reason I needed this functionality was to strip out an embedded carriage return in the scanner’s input. I’m not sure why you need to detect the difference between keyed input vs. scanned input, but the reason may change the approach.
