What is the best type of animal for a five year old? Except a fish /bird.?
I would say a young cat ( not a very young kitten) One that’s around 9 months old and has already been vaccinated and spayed or neutered. A cat of this age loves to play,yet isn’t so delicate that it will be hurt like a small kitten could be.Also,kitty has claws,so if the child gets too rough,the cat will let him/her know. Most cats get along great with kids who are respectful and kind to them,so you have to teach the child to be kind to the animal.Also,cats don’t have to be walked or obedience trained,and they aren’t as messy as a dog – the child can help with feeding and watering,and scooping the litterbox,but an adult should do the actual cleaning,of course.
I wouldn’t recommend a turtle as they carry salmonella ( I have turtles) and need special lighting,food,and calcium supplements.
