Help! I don’t understand Emily Dickinson poem’s?
I have to come up with a thesis statement. But I can’t come up w/one because I don’t understand what the poem is trying to say. If any one can help me find the meaning so I can understand that be great; The Butterfly’s Day
From cocoon forth a butterfly
As lady from her door
Emerged — a summer afternoon –
Repairing everywhere,
Without design, that I could trace,
Except to stray abroad
On miscellaneous enterprise
The clovers understood.
Her pretty parasol was seen
Contracting in a field
Where men made hay, then struggling hard
With an opposing cloud,
Where parties, phantom as herself,
To Nowhere seemed to go
In purposeless circumference,
As ‘t were a tropic show.
And notwithstanding bee that worked,
And flower that zealous blew,
This audience of idleness
Disdained them, from the sky,
Till sundown crept, a steady tide,
And men that made the hay,
And afternoon, and butterfly,
Extinguished in its sea.
Or if anyone knows an easier poem from the 1800′s.
At least avoid writing a thesis statement that is false. This is profoundly NOT a poem that declares that life is purposeless. It’s packed FULL of purposes–but the purpose of the butterfly’s flight is never to be made clear to the witness of that flight.
It can be taken that the butterfly is meant as metaphor for ‘women of status, who need not commit their lives to ordinary purposes,’ but I think it would be error so to take it. The butterfly as metaphor for butterfly supplies sufficient mystery.
The poem gives witness and personal commentary on the itinerary of a butterfly:
The itinerary is simple enough:
1) the butterfly emerges from its cocoon
2) it flits about briefly, sipping at the clovers
3) it rests briefly
4) it flies high
5) it stays in the sky until it gets too dark to see what happens
The commentary shows us continual interpretation of all that is seen, but it shows puzzlement about how the butterfly’s activity should be understood.
The butterfly does move to some tasks the witness understands–’miscellaneous enterprise the clovers understood,’ eating and resting (the latter signaled by the ‘contracting parasol’). Moreover, the butterfly is surrounded by business that is understood by the witness as purposeful: men make hay, a bee goes about its work, even the flowers zealously resist the wind, another tireless worker.
But the butterfly puzzles the observer right from the beginning of its career, ‘repairing everywhere without design that I could trace,’ then to, ‘struggling hard with an opposing cloud where parties, phantom as herself, to Nowhere seemed to go in purposeless circumference.’ [this may mean that there were other butterflies also aloft, pretty colors made pallid by distance and the brightness of the sky, but that's surmise on my part] That phrase ‘struggling . . circumference’ is as elegant an expression of “It didn’t make sense to me” as one is EVER likely to see.
And it seems clear that, to this witness, action to no obvious purpose is ‘idleness.’ I take her judgment that the butterfly ‘disdained’ the purposeful activity below, coupled with the comment on idleness to signal at least a mild disapproval of butterfly behavior. (And, yeah, you could take that as a possible side-thesis, I suppose.)
The coming of sundown, simply viewed, only closes off the observations. The mystery of the butterfly’s flight remains . . . mysterious! It may be that sundown stands as metaphor for the end of life–but that seems to me an unnecessary conjecture. It suffices that sundown stands as marker of the end of daylight observation.
So, what theses can you make of that rough analysis above?
“Some why never sees its because.”
“You can’t know the answer to every question because you don’t always have the time to find it.”
“Butterflies are weird.”
“Work is for those who stay low.”
“When you’re rich and pretty, you eat for free and you get to hang out in the VIP room upstairs”
“Mystery explained is boring; mysteries that linger are fun.”
The list can be extended easily, or made more scholarly.
