Cockatoo problems?
I set up a birdfeeder a few months ago and started putting seeds out. It was a big hit with all the birds, as you can imagine (being the end of winter) and we started to get Parrots, rosellas, ravens… and then the cockatoos found out.
They were okay at first, ate from the seed tray only, didn’t do much else. But they they started to chew the birdfeeder to bits. And when they’d finished with that, they went to work on the windowsill. We eventually had to pull apart the birdfeeder and take it away. That got rid of most of the cocokatoos… but one.
This one breaks my heart! He sits there, saying ‘hello?’, he follows me around the house by jumping from window to window, dances up and down, shows off his crest and wings, and is so stubborn- it must be two weeks since we had the seeds out, but he’s still going.
My question is, is there a way to get him to have the seeds and not our windowsill? A special ‘cockatoo chew’ product or something? I miss feeding him!
wow… I take it you live in Australia and this is a “wild” cockatoo? Or perhaps formerly a pet that somehow got out or was released…
Yes… you can buy a stainless steel bowl and provide him foods that way. Perhaps buy a large cockatoo chew toy and hang it up for him too, he might appreciate that as well. Be sure the bowl you buy is definitely stainless steel as many other metals are toxic to birds.
